Matcha Green Tea
What is Matcha?
Matcha is a finely milled green tea powder that is the staple ingredient of the traditional Japanese tea ceremony. Matcha has become popular due to its beautiful visual appeal, numerous health benefits, and wonderful, distinct flavor.
Health Benefits of Matcha
Unlike most tea in which the tealeaf is steeped and removed before drinking the brew, Matcha drinkers consume ALL of the antioxidants rather than only those extracted from the tealeaf into the brew. Because of this, Matcha powdered green tea has well over 100 times more antioxidants than regularly brewed green tea. These antioxidants include the powerful EGCG, which prevents disease and detoxifies the body naturally. Matcha powder is packed with fiber, chlorophyll and vitamins, which lower cholesterol and blood sugar. Matcha powder also boosts metabolism and burns calories. Matcha contains highly concentrated green tea vitamins, minerals, chlorophyll, and the unique L-theanine amino acids found almost exclusively in green tea.
How to Prepare Matcha
There are lots of ways you can prepare the organic matcha powder sold by Wu Mountain. The most traditional but also the most time consuming method is to use a bowl and bamboo matcha whisk. With this method you add two teaspoons of matcha powder into the bowl then add about a cup of near boiling water (80 degrees celsius) and whisk the powder into the water creating a thick matcha brew. This whisking process is performed during the Japanese tea ceremony and could be a cool way to prepare some tea for your friends if you want to have a tea party, and have the time.
Frequently you'll be preparing the matcha for your own consumption and whisking the matcha will not be all that practical. Luckily, matcha is also the fastest tea to prepare when you are in a hurry. All you need to do is mix the powder thoroughly with water of any temperature. You can use a spoon to stir it into a cup of hot water, or, what we often do is put some matcha powder into a water bottle, add some water and shake up the bottle. Now you have a superfood energy boost to take with you on the go!
Matcha powder is much stronger than any other type of tea. If you put 5+ teaspoons of powder into one cup of water it's going to be like drinking a 24oz double espresso-- it's truly potent stuff. This is where you'll have to experiment a bit and find out how much matcha it takes to give you the boost you want. A good starting point would be 1.5 teaspoons in a large mug of hot (or cold) water. After trying it once, you will start to get a feeling of how much matcha has how big of an affect on your energy levels.
